Loss of membrane integrity by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was studied in isolated mitochondria of castor bean. Incubation of mitochondria with H2O2 resulted in the release of fumarase with a concomitant loss of phospho-lipids. Degradation of membrane was found to occur independent of lipid peroxidation. H2O2-treated mitochondria were able to degrade exogenous radiolabelled phospho-lipids.
