INCORPORATION OF KINETIN INTO SALVINIA
Department of Biological Sciences, State University of New York Stony Brook, New York, U. S. A.
The uptake of kinetin-814C in the aquatic fern, Salvinia, was correlated with an inhibition of stem elongation and floating leaf expansion. The kinetin-inhibition depended on intact molecules of kinetin which are incorporated mostly in a supernatant fraction containing soluble non-polynucleotides and RNA. Recovery from inhibition occurred when kinetin was depleted from the medium. That portion of the plant which was produced after recovery did not contain significant levels of kinetin-814C.
