OXIDATION OF PHLORIDZIN BY ISOLATED CHLOROPLASTS

JOSEPH NEUMANN and MORDHAY AVRON

Botany Department, Tel-Aviv University Tel-Aviv, Israel and Biochemistry Section, The Weizmann Institute of Science Rehovoth, Israel

Phloridzin was shown to be oxidized by chloroplast fragments from swiss-chard. From inhibitor studies, kinetics and affinity toward oxygen, it was inferred that the oxidation was mediated by a phenolase in a "cresolase" type reaction. Atebrin was found to inhibit the enzymatic oxidation of phloridzin and of 4-methyl catechol.
