EFFECT OF AIR IONS ON IAA CONTENT OF BARLEY SEEDLINGS
The Air Ion Laboratory, Division of Medical Microbiology and Immunology and the Naval Biological Laboratory of the School of Public Health, the University of California Berkeley 4, California, U.S.A.
Exposure of barley seedlings (Hordeum vulgaris) growing in sand and liquid cultures to either negatively- or positively-ionized air results in increased growth in terms of integral elongation, and fresh and dry weight increase. Using large quantities of tissue and a modified method it was found that free and bound IAA contents were not significantly modified by exposure of seedlings to ionized air. It might be supposed that an equilibrium between free and bound IAA was not modified by exposure to air ions.
