2To whom correspondence should be addressed.

Brief treatment of mt+ gametes of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii with trypsin or {alpha}-chymotrypsin resulted in complete loss of flagellar agglutinability, without loss of cell motility, and concomitant release of cell body agglutinins (CBAs) into the culture medium. Release of CBAs also occurred when walled gametes without flagella were treated with proteases.
