Inhibition of Germination of Photosensitive Lettuce Seeds by Phenylmethylsulfonyl Fluoride, an Inhibitor of Proteases
Laboratory of Applied Biology, Faculty of Living Science, Kyoto Prefectural University Kyoto, Japan
The changes in the amounts of storage peptides in lettuce seeds were estimated during imbibition. Levels of the 32- to 39-kDa components of the storage peptides in seeds irradiated with red light began to decrease from the 12th h of imbibition, but this decrease was completely inhibited by phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride (PMSF, 1 HIM). PMSF decreased the growth potential of the embryonic axis and thereby inhibited germination. The partial breadown of the storage peptides appears to be necessary if the embryonic axis is to rupture the seed coat and endosperm layer of lettuce seeds.
