CHARACTERISTICS OF X-RAY-INDUCED ABERRANTS OF LEMNA PERPUSILLA 6746

Seven aberrant strains have been produced by x-irradiation of wild-type Lemna perpusilla 6746. A quantitative description of five of the aberrants is given.

Four strains (98-H, 99-B-1, 1073 and 5104) produce very few seeds and these always lack embryos. Strain 7130 also produces few seeds but these are viable.

Strain 98-H grows slowly and on high sucrose concentrations produces high numbers of fronds per colony.

Strain 7130 and wild-type do not differ with respect either to growth rate or radiosensitivity.

Strains 1073 and 5104 grow slightly slower than wild-type and are much more radiosensitive. In addition, strain 1073 is inefficient in maintaining a definite frond sequence, and, under low-intensity light or in complete darkness, its flowering is markedly reduced.
