Isolation of Empty Packets from Anabaena-free Azolla

Eiji Uheda

Radiation Center of Osaka Prefecture Shinke-cho, Sakai, Osaka 593, Japan

Empty packets were isolated from Anabaena-free Azolla (Azolla pinnata var. imbricata R. Br.) leaves treated with the enzyme solution. The isolated packets were enclosed by a 10–20 nm thick envelope membrane and contained hair cells. The solubility of the envelope from Anabaena-free Azolla to enzymes and chemicals was the same as that from Anabaena-containing Azolla.
