Pigment Composition of Chlorophyll-Protein Complexes Isolated from the Green Alga Bryopsis maxima
Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Toho University 2-2-1 Miyama, Funabashi, Chiba 274, Japan
SDS-solubilized thylakoid membranes of Bryopsis maxima showed a similar pattern to those of higher plants in SDS-poIyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Absorption spectra and pigment composition of both CP1 and CPa bands were similar to those of higher plants and other algae. Five bands containing chlorophyll (Chl) b were divided into three categories; a group of major light-harvesting Chl a/b-protein complexes (LHCP 1, LHCP 2 and LHCP 3), a minor LHCP (LHCP 3') and a photosystem I complex (CP1a). LHCP 1, the high molecular form, showed the lowest Chl a/b ratio among the LHCPs, and contained only xanthophylls as carotenoids. LHCP 2, LHCP 3 and LHCP 3' bands contained xanthophylls and carotene. Carotenoid composition of LHCP 3' was different from that of the major LHCPs. CP1a band contained a considerable amount of siphonaxanthin and siphonein.
