Separation of Different Cell Types by Rotating Electric Fields

Günter Fuhr, Rolf Hagedorn and Horst Göring

Department of Biology, Humboldt-University of Berlin 104 Berlin, GDR

A new method is proposed for separating different cell types by application of a rotating electric field technique. Plasma membrane electrical properties and cell size are critical parameters for cell separation. A suitable chamber is described and the theoretical and experimental aspects of cell movement are presented. Kalanchoë daigremontiana mesophyll protoplasts traveled with a velocity of about 3–7 µm/s on the agar surface at a field strength of 3.5×103 V/m.
