D-Proline Effect on L-Proline-Requiring Mutants in Zea mays (L.)

Chiara Tonelli

Sezione di Genetica e Microbiologia, Dipartimento di Biologia, Università degli Studi di Milano Via Celoria, 26, 20133 Milano-Italy

D-Proline and three proline analogs, L-hydroxyproline, L-azetidine-2-carboxylic acid and L-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid, were tested for their effect on proline-requiring mutants (pro 1) of maize at the concentrations used for phenotypic repair with L-proline. D-Proline was the only one that promoted pro 1 mutant growth and did not affect the growth of normal siblings. The possible role of D-proline in repairing pro 1 mutants is discussed.
