Protoplasts were isolated enzymatically from protonemata of several moss species. The protoplasts began to divide at limited frequencies within several days when cultured on White's inorganic medium supplemented with 0.3 M mannitol. Vigorous growth into filamentous protonemata was induced when they were transplanted onto media of lower osmolarity.
