Methionine sulfoximine (MSX), a glutamine synthetase inhibitor, suppressed the inhibitory effect of ammonia on nitrate uptake by Anabaena cells in both the light and dark. In the light, MSX did not inhibit nitrate uptake in the absence of ammonia, but under dark conditions, MSX above 2 µM inhibited nitrate uptake. Nitrite uptake, which is not affected by ammonia in either the light or the dark, was inhibited by MSX in the dark but not in the light.
