Light-Controlled Cytoplasmic Streaming in Vallisneria Mesophyll Cells

Shingo Takagi and Reiko Nagai

Department of Biology, College of General Education, Osaka University Toyonaka 560, Japan

The effect of light irradiation on cytoplasmic streaming in Vallisneria mesophyll cells was investigated. Red light ({lambda}max=650 nm, 1.9 W/m2) was most effective to induce streaming. Although induced streaming was markedly inhibited specifically by continuous irradiation with far-red light ({lambda}max=730 nm, 1.2 W/m2), this inhibitory effect did not appear in the presence of La3+.

Intracellular calcium was examined by electron microscopic cytochemistry. In the mobile cytoplasm under red light irradiation, little precipitate was formed in the reaction with antimony. On the other hand, much more precipitate was observed in the cytoplasm rendered immobile by far-red light irradiation.

From these results, we conclude that red light induces streaming by decreasing Ca2+ concentration in the cytoplasm and far-red light inhibits streaming by increasing Ca2+ concentration in the cytoplasm.
