Light-Induced Changes in the Molecular Size of Starch in Colorless Chlorella Cells

Akio Kamiya

Laboratory of Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Teikyo University Sagamiko, Kanagawa 199-01, Japan

Starch from colorless mutant cells of Chlorella vulgaris (# 125), grown heterotrophically in the dark, was fractionated by agarose gel chromatography. The molecular weight distribution of starch showed only one pronounced maximum at 2×106 (L-starch). Exposure of cells to white light decreased significantly in the amounts of the total starch and L-starch. This also was true under non-growth conditions, the same effect being found to depend on blue light. The role of light on starch degradation is discussed.
