Effect of Phytochrome on Uptake and Efflux of Gibberellin

Dan Mertz

Division of Biological Sciences, University of Missouri Columbia, MO., U.S.A.

The effect of red light on uptake and efflux of gibberellin by etiolated pea stem sections has been determined by the technique of compartmental analysis. Exposure of segments to red light inhibited uptake and efflux of [3H]-GA1 by the cytoplasmic compartment while efflux from the vacuolar compartment was not significantly affected. It is suggested that phytochrome may alter the permeability properties of the plasma membrane and/or the binding of GA1, as, a means of controlling the basipetal transport of gibberellin.
