Evidence for the Regulation of the Shift in Cellulose Microfibril Orientation in Freeze-Fractured Plasma Membrane of Boergesenia forbesii
Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Kochi University Kochi 780, Japan
Morphological evidence regarding the regulation of the direction of movement of the cellulose-synthesizing complexes in Boergesenia was obtained by observing the distribution of intramembranous particles (IMPS) around the complexes. In complexes with straight configurations, the distribution of IMPS on both sides of the complexes was almost equal. In complexes characterized by a curved configuration, however, the IMPS density was greater in the outer half-circle of the curve. Some particles on this side were attached to or intruded into the complex, and their sizes were no different from those of the IMPS on the fractured plane. These results indicate that the distribution and orientation of the particles in relation to the complex have been affected by membrane fluidity and, that membrane fluidity might play a key role in determining the regulation of the direction of movement of the complex.
