Anther Respiratory Activity and Chilling Resistance in Rice

The respiration of anthers in several rice cultivars differing in chilling resistance was analysed with Arrhenius plots. The plots for respiration of mature anthers showed linearity in a temperature range between 7 and 35°C, whereas those of meiotic anthers showed breaks at a temperature range between 18 and 24°C. The break point in a given cultivar was nearly identical to the temperature below which the meiotic anthers suffered from chilling injury. The break in the Arrhenius plots indicated that the meiotic anthers were very susceptible to chilling. In addition, cultivars with relatively high chilling resistance showed lower critical temperatures for meiotic anther respiration than those with relatively low resistance. Reciprocal F1 hybrids between two cultivars with relatively high and low resistance showed almost the same respiratory parameters as those of the parent with high resistance, suggesting that the parameters were inheritable as a dominant character. We postulate that there is a close correlation between the chilling sensitivity of anthers and the dependence of respiratory activity upon temperature, and that the critical temperature of meiotic anthers can be taken as an indicator of the degree of chilling resistance in rice plants.
