Hydroxypyruvate reductase activity in etiolated cotyledons of Pharbitis nil is highly stimulated by white light. The action spectrum shows three effective regions: blue, red and far red. The main characteristics of this high irradiance reaction response is a high blue efficiency and a low red efficiency. Experiments with herbicide-treated plants demonstrated that chlorophyll is not involved in the regulation but suggest that a specific blue-absorbing pigment is involved, in addition to phytochrome.
