Peroxydisulfate ion, a plant growth inhibitor, and its reaction with IAA

Douglas C. McCain and John L. Montet

Department of Chemistry, University of Southern Mississippi Southern Station Box 9281, Hattiesburg, Mississippi 39401, U.S.A.

Germination and sprouting tests were used to demonstrate that peroxydisulfate ion, S2O8–2, reversibly inhibits turnip sprout growth but does not prevent germination. Peroxydisulfate ion is kinetically inert to most organic compounds but readily oxidizes IAA. Activation energy and rate constants for the reaction were measured and the pH effect studied. Hormone oxidation is proposed as the effective mechanism of growth inhibition.
