Stimulation of lipid peroxidation and carotenoid bleaching by deuterium oxide in illuminated chloroplast fragments: Participation of singlet molecular oxygen in the reactions
Department of Biology, Kyushu Dental College Kitakyushu 803, Japan
The effects of deuterium oxide (D2O) on light-induced lipid peroxidation and carbonylcyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP)-induced carotenoid photobleaching were examined in isolated chloroplast fragments. D2O stimulated the lipid peroxidation in the presence of CCCP or methyl viologen as well as in their absence. Carotenoid photobleaching was also enhanced by D2O. These results led to the conclusion that the lipid peroxidation and part of the carotenoid photobleaching were induced by the singlet molecular oxygen because D2O prolongs its lifetime.
