The electrogenic ion pump revealed by the external pH effect on the membrane potential of Nitella. Influences of external ions and electric current on the pH effect

Kazuyoshi Saito and Mitsugi Senda

Department of Agricultural Chemistry, Kyoto University Kyoto 606, Japan

The influences of external ions and electric current on the pH effect of the membrane potential of Nitella are described. Results are explained in terms of a pH-dependent electrogenic ion pump.

The reduction of membrane resistance with a pH rise is attributed to the pump current being potential-dependent.
