Gametogenesis in Chlamydomonas III. Daily fluctuation of sex-competence
Department of Biology, College of General Education, Osaka University Toyonaka, Osaka 560, Japan
The daily fluctuation of sex-competence in Chlamydomonas cells grown in synchronous vegetative cultures was investigated. 1) The sex-competence of cells in synchronous vegetative cultures fluctuated during the light-dark cycle; being high in the late dark phase to early light phase, low in the early dark phase, and highest at the end of the dark phase (D-12; the time of release of daughter cells). 2) There was also a daily fluctuation in the sex-competence of cells in gametogenic cultures during incubation in the dark except at a low temperature (7°C). This daily fluctuation in gametogenic cultures in the dark occurred without cell multiplication. 3) The pregamete (and/or the latent gamete) discussed in the preceding paper (1) might have an inactive form of sex-competence.
