High ice nucleating ability in plant leaves
Biological Laboratory, College of General Education, Kyushu University Ropponmatsu, Fukuoka 810, Japan
A high ice nucleating ability in leaves of Veronica persica and Buxus microphylla was observed on analyzing the frequency distribution of their freezing temperatures. The most efficient ice nucleators in Veronica leaves exist in structures within the leaf blades (mesophyll), and those of Buxus in structures within the midrib (vascular tissue). Dissolved or suspended leaf structures were much less effective.
