The role of a glyoxylate-glycolate system in chloroplasts of higher plants
Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Ochanomizu University Tokyo, Japan
Photoreduction of glyoxylate and oxidation of glycolate were investigated using unwashed chloroplasts from spinach leaves. A glyoxylate
glycolate system operated in light and under aerobic conditions. Accompanying the photoreduction of glyoxylate and the oxidation of glycolate, was the disappearance of inorganic phosphate. Photoreduction of oxalate was also observed in illuminated chloroplasts. The reaction rate was, however, much lower than that for the photoreduction of glyoxylate.
